Indigenous Outreach Ministries

The Mackay Christian College Indigenous Outreach Ministry is a ministry initiative of Mackay Christian College and its parent church, Mackay Christian Family, a member of the Australian Christian Churches (Assemblies of God in Australia).  The MCC  Indigenous Outreach Ministry seeks to care for the spiritual, social and educational needs of Indigenous people groups of Australia.

Mackay Christian College has been committed to sending outreach teams to Indigenous Communities, originating in the Torres Strait, since 2002. Since their humble beginnings, consecutive teams have enjoyed wonderful hospitality and breathtaking scenery while the trip consistently proves to be an excellent opportunity for team members to actively seek to fulfil their greatest commission of serving others.

Pastor Peter Lister fell in love with the people of the Torres Strait and surrounding areas on their first trip in 2001 and, along with his wife Priscilla, saw an opportunity to minister. They have opened their home to a number of students from the Torres Strait whom they have formed a relationship with over the years.

More than 200 Mackay Christian College students and staff have now participated in short term ministry trips departing Mackay in the June – July school holiday break. Teams of both staff and students regularly visit Thursday Island, Warraber (Sue) Island, and 5 indigenous communities in the Cape York Peninsula. Teams usually run Bible-based children’s holiday programs by day and church services and/or community workshops by night.
