Robotics Club

The students at Mackay Christian College have the opportunity in Middle and Senior years to participate in our Robotics program. The students meet at lunchtimes and after school to learn skills in building and programing robots using the Lego RCX or NXT programmable bricks. Students use these skills to complete design challenges and participate in competitions at a local, regional or state level. We have used Robotics as a context for extending our gifted or motivated students who use allocated class time to complete the above mentioned challenges. These challenges require creative thinking, teamwork, persistence and resilience, as the students discover that the challenges are more complex than they imagined. We have sent teams of students to several competitions to play Robocup Junior Soccer and Robocup Junior Dance. The soccer requires 2 robots per team to operate autonomously, to play soccer on a 3 square metre field for 20 minutes without any interference or decision making by the team. The Dance challenge requires teams of students to create robots, programs and props that move in time with music to entertain an audience.
